COURSE DESCRIPTION
Module #1: Problem Solving
Introducing the Hairy Bikie problem-solving strategies developed by Dr Jeffrey Baron Levi for those young people with compromised learning. Dr Baron Levi explains how the Hairy Bikie is an example of a metacognitive strategy and how it is generic in nature in that it can be applied across a range of contents and situations. The notion of metacognition is explained. Dr Baron Levi explains the development of the strategies which he calls a frontal lobe prosthesis, provides real examples using the strategies and includes a video of teaching a child to use the Hairy Bikie. The strategies have been carefully researched and used successfully over many years with young people with Traumatic Brain Injury, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Learning Difficulties. The Hairy Bikie has been used successfully with young people from primary/elementary school level through to tertiary level. A visual approach is used with pre-schoolers.
Exercises are provided to reinforce learning to implement the Hairy Bikie.
Module #2: Individualising Strategies
Dr Baron Levi explains how the Hairy Bikie can be flexibly adapted to particular young persons and situations. Case studies are included demonstrating how the Hairy Bikie can be adapted using the young person’s own language and interests.
Module #3: Assessment
Assessment as a means of measuring everyday behaviours and functioning in order to develop an intervention plan. The Functional Executive Scale (FES) is a criteria reference test developed by Dr Baron Levi to measure metacognitive and emotional/behavioural functioning in the young person’s environment. How to use the FES to develop an intervention plan. Case studies are included. A downloadable copy of the FES with scoring criteria is included in this module.
